"It is so hard to believe an entire year has passed. Out of 50 applicants, Paul stood out among them. After narrowing down the contestants to only three to interview, I found that Paul’s positive attitude and desire to change were what earned him “Fitness for a Year.” When we first started working together, Paul expressed his goals of weight loss, learning proper food management, learning how to work out properly to prevent injury and strengthening his core stabilizers. To date, he has far surpassed his initial goals by committing to the entire year of health and wellness and putting his health in our hands.

Although Paul was very quiet, he remained receptive to everything I taught him. He has a history of two spinal fusion surgeries, nutritional concerns, kidney stones, and hypertension. His first nutrition consults addressed these issues, including education about the conditions and information about changing his eating behaviors. Paul learned to eat small, frequent meals (three to four hours apart), to include a protein and carb in each meal and snack, and to get the correct ratio of nutrients and amounts of the various food groups. We changed his caloric intake a few times during the year to accommodate his goals and to ensure a steady loss of body fat. Most recently, we actually increased his calories to overcome a plateau, helping him to lose a total of nearly one percent body fat in the final month.

Considering the fact that he has a desk job and has had two spinal fusions, we worked to remedy Paul’s poor posture and stabilize his core. Because of these efforts, he has decreased his risk of injury and enhanced his performance at all levels. He now performs a range of intermediate to advanced exercises and is knowledgeable about how to use the correct technique during each.

From the very beginning, he assumed an active role in his own training, the best way to facilitate success. He asked questions and constantly applied the exercises’ concepts to his complete regimen. With my guidance about what to do, he took the initiative to come in on off-days to do strength training and cardio. At each session, he was ready to learn and work hard. Paul made his health his top priority this year, and that’s why he was so successful.

What is so remarkable is that Paul was so inspired throughout his own journey that he now wants to help others meet their personal health and wellness goals. For the past few months, he has been preparing and studying for his personal trainer certification exam We have spent our sessions talking more about the specifics of training principles so that he can communicate more effectively with his own clients. He successfully passed his exam in November and has already begun training two clients.

Paul Roberts’s story of “Fitness for a Year, Change for a Lifetime,” is an inspiration, proving that if you commit your mind to your health, your body will follow. Personally, this has been such a rewarding and valuable experience for me as a trainer. CORE Fitness has now gained a new trainer and most importantly, a friend. "

Paul's Story:

"I’m a 43 -year -old man and I really want to get in shape, lose weight and be healthier so I can do the things I want to do and not be limited by my lack of physical conditioning.I work at a bank in Wilmington and spend my days sitting at my desk working on a computer. I’m tired most of the time and have trouble sleeping.

I have had two back surgeries due to herniated discs. I had a lumbar fusion and a cervical fusion in 1998 and 2002 respectively. I’m not really sure what kind of exercises I should and shouldn’t be doing. I’d like to strengthen my core stabilizer muscles to reduce the stress on my back and neck, but I’m concerned that if I do the wrong exercise or do them incorrectly I could injure myself.

I have some dietary restrictions due to kidney stones and high blood pressure, but I’m not really sure how they all fit together and what I can or should be eating in order to lose and maintain a healthy weight.

I need to be able to prepare relatively quick and easy meals since I spend a lot of time in the evenings taking my son to and from various activities.

I am serious about my health and am committed to making a lifestyle change, but I’m not sure how to achieve these goals by myself. Please consider me as a candidate for the Core Fitness program.

Thank you."
